Versions of iOS before the current one, up to version 12, would require users to attempt to open the doctored email, although even this could potentially be worked around by determined hackers, while on the current version all it takes is for the Mail app to attempt to download the message, which could happen with the app in the background.
Earlier versions were not tested, so it’s possible it’s been around even longer. The researchers claim to have found that the flaw is present in all versions of iOS dating back to version 6, released with iPhone 5 in 2012. From there it may be possible to access and leak sensitive data held by the device. If an email is over a certain size, or has certain features which mean the app needs a lot of memory to handle it, the attack can break out of the iPhone’s famously restricted app security controls.

That’s according to a group of researchers in the US, who have released details of the vulnerability in advance of a patch being issued to users by Apple, after seeing the attack used to target high-profile businesses and the media.Īccording to a report on the issue released by research group ZecOps, the bug is actually a pair of vulnerabilities both relating to memory management in the app. A major bug in Apple’s Mail app, a built-in basic included on all iPhones, could allow hackers to access phone data with no user interaction needed – on the most recent version of iOS, all it takes is receiving a maliciously-crafted email to an account connected to the Mail app.
